OPA merges with the IESO

On January 1st 2015, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) will merge with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to create a new organization, under the IESO name.

The IESO coordinates Ontario's electricity needs, balances the supply of power, and directs the flow of electricity across the transmission system from various generation sources. The OPA is a long-term planning agency that forecasts future demand and the potential for conservation and renewable energy in Ontario.

The merger will transfer the OPA’s objectives, powers and contracts to the IESO and continue the IESO’s current responsibilities. The amalgamation of these agencies is expected to streamline electricity sector planning, reduce overlap of responsibilities and save money going forward.
